Chinatown Night Market

chinatownillustration

This coming weekend August 16/17th and also Aug. 30/31st I’ll be selling some art prints, originals, books and postcards in the Chinatown Night Market. I’ve been looking forward to participating in this market all summer, as my studio space is right in the heart of Chinatown. This year they’ve brought in some “new flavours” to the traditional market, by inviting local artists, galleries and backyard businesses to be a part of the event. And THIS Friday there is going to be a “Dumpling Derby and Cook Off”, which I am quite excited about.

The work above was completed today in anticipation of this upcoming event. It’s a fairly simple illustration, but I wanted to create a piece that acknowledged the context of the market. Plus, I’ve always loved Chinese lanterns, and it was fun to experiment with the combination of embroidery and drawing once again.

If you do have some free time this weekend, come visit! The market runs from 6-10pm and I’ll be sharing a space with Eglantine Shines and China Cloud Gallery, who are selling some wonderful handmade treasures.

Hope to see you there.

Blue Skies

BlueSkiesJoelleGebhardt2013

This is a by-product of photoshop and some digital photos I took this past week. Landscapes will never get old for me, especially when there’s blue sky  as a back drop. I could hardly contain myself on this road trip to Saskatchewan. It’s been a long time since I’ve simply stared at nature for hours at a time. Of course, no replica can contain all the glory of the original and that is why I chose to have the text interrupt and block some of the imagery.

New Buttonman Series

buttonmen hulabuttonman

I started this series a couple years ago and titled it “Dates with Mr.Buttonman”. He is an embroidered stick-man with a button head (obviously). The first series showed him in various funny situations throughout the calendar year. The illustrations were then compiled into a 2012 calendar and sold at a local stationary store and also online. Check out my website if you’re curious.

The above illustration features Mr.Buttonman on his yearly vacation. I have yet to embroider a pina colada in his “hand”. These new images will be reproduced as individual greeting cards and some postcard books. I’ll be selling the books, along with originals, as a guest artist at the China Cloud Gallery booth in the Chinatown Night Market one weekend August. Stay tuned for more information.

If you haven’t been to the market yet, it’s a great event to visit on a summer weekend. They’ve changed it this year, by bringing in some new vendors alongside the traditional booths.  It runs every weekend from Friday-Sunday night.

Word in the Woods

wordinthewoods_joellegebhardtwomeninthewoods_joellegebhardt

I just finished these illustrations for a Creative Writing/Women’s Conference in Kelowna, B.C. The event is being held in an outdoor auditorium built in the forest. Isn’t that awesome?! Naturally, there had to be lots of flowers, animals and a log cabin in these illustrations. The drawing and lettering is hand-drawn with ink and colored digitally (except for the B.C Map in the background).

The conference will take place in early August, and is for ladies fresh out of high school and older. If you want more details, feel free to email me and I’ll forward it to the ladies organizing it!

Coming soon!

thepursuitsketch

This isn’t the best picture, but here’s a little glimpse into an upcoming project I’m working on. There will be two illustrations, both for a writing/creative conference in Kelowna, BC in August. The first one will read ” The Pursuit: Women in the Woods” though I’m still working out the details on typography and such. Stay tuned for the finished work!

PB and PJ

pbandpj_joellegebhardt

I had a dream a couple months ago that I was sleeping inside a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It’s not often that I’ll draw illustrations from dreams, but this one was so vivid and bizarre that I had to make something based on it. This final illustration is hand-drawn and embroidered into watercolor paper and then tinted digitally.

The theme on the Illustration Friday  blog is “Sweet” this week, so it I’ve posted it on there as well.

Final IronClad Art Submission

ironclad

This design I made for the Vancouver Ironclad Art competition has been chosen for the final exhibition. It’s based on a photo I took in Chinatown near my studio, on a typical rainy Vancouver day.

The idea behind the competition was to use public art to decorate the sewer manhole covers in Vancouver and to distinguish between the storm and sanitary sewers. However, I submitted this design as a possibility for both sewer systems. It will be on display, along with the other submissions, at the Interurban Gallery on East Hastings from May 28th- June 8th. Winners and Honorable Mentions will be announced on June 10th. If you would like to vote for my design for the People’s Choice Award click on this link: http://www.ironcladart.ca/view/?ID=692.

I was incredibly busy the week I submitted the design, and would have loved to spend more time on it. So, it’s a pleasant surprise that it was still chosen to be in the exhibition. There were many wonderful designs, and I would encourage you to look through them and vote for others as well.

10 minute sketch of the cardboard boy

cardboardboy

So I’ve been told that this story isn’t as funny on paper as it was in person. But, I have to draw something about it anyway.

Two evenings ago my husband and I were sitting at our kitchen table eating dinner, when we saw through the window a young boy come bolting down the sidewalk with a cardboard box on his head. I have no idea where he came from, or where he was going (hopefully he knew where he was going!), but it looked hilarious and made my day.

Maybe he was merely on a casual run on a sunny day and the cardboard box served as his hat to protect him from the heat? Let’s hope this is the case.

I’ve decided to make a 10 minute sketch in his honor, in the hopes that someone else might find this as funny as I did 🙂

Little Red Hen

littleredhen_joellegebhardt2013

I’m experimenting with a new artistic style, a combination of embroidery and drawing. The title of this piece is, “Don’t Mess with Little Red”. It’s based on my favourite children’s story The Little Red Hen. The moral of the story is basically, “he who does not work, does not eat”. If you aren’t familiar with it there are many variations online. I’ve decided to portray the moment when the hen has finished baking her loaf of bread after a long day of work. She stands on top of it with determination and confidence. Trust me, you would not want to pick a fight with this chicken!
