Long Distance Memories

LonelyGiraffeWEB_JoelleGebhardt

One of the joys of moving homes is that it forces you to go through all your stuff. (I say “joy” slightly sarcastically because going through old stuff is also incredibly annoying!) Today, I pulled out this old drawing that I mailed to my now, husband, then boyfriend, from Canada to Germany. At the time, we had been in a long-distance relationship for 8 months, not knowing when we would see each other again. I was missing him like crazy and kept seeing all these couples walking around googly-eyed, holding hands and simply being together.  But rather than sending another letter venting how much I missed him, I decided to lighten the mood with a drawing.

There are certainly benefits to long-distance relationships. You learn to communicate really well; you have an excuse to send old-fashioned, hand-written letters back and forth; and when you get in an argument, you have some space to cool off. But, that feeling of lacking or “missing”, never went away for me. I remember it well, and am glad we don’t have to suffer that anymore!

It’s coming up on Valentine’s Day this week, and it’s also the two year anniversary of our engagement. So it seems appropriate to look back and be thankful that the lone giraffe eating popcorn in the movie theatre is no longer me!

For those of you who can relate to this poor giraffe: Move back a row and cuddle up next to the aliens. They are a friendlier than you think!

Happy Valentine’s Day 🙂

New Buttonman Series

buttonmen hulabuttonman

I started this series a couple years ago and titled it “Dates with Mr.Buttonman”. He is an embroidered stick-man with a button head (obviously). The first series showed him in various funny situations throughout the calendar year. The illustrations were then compiled into a 2012 calendar and sold at a local stationary store and also online. Check out my website if you’re curious.

The above illustration features Mr.Buttonman on his yearly vacation. I have yet to embroider a pina colada in his “hand”. These new images will be reproduced as individual greeting cards and some postcard books. I’ll be selling the books, along with originals, as a guest artist at the China Cloud Gallery booth in the Chinatown Night Market one weekend August. Stay tuned for more information.

If you haven’t been to the market yet, it’s a great event to visit on a summer weekend. They’ve changed it this year, by bringing in some new vendors alongside the traditional booths.  It runs every weekend from Friday-Sunday night.

Word in the Woods

I just finished these illustrations for a Creative Writing/Women’s Conference in Kelowna, B.C. The event is being held in an outdoor auditorium built in the forest. Isn’t that awesome?! Naturally, there had to be lots of flowers, animals and a log cabin in these illustrations. The drawing and lettering is hand-drawn with ink and colored digitally (except for the B.C Map in the background).

The conference will take place in early August, and is for ladies fresh out of high school and older. If you want more details, feel free to email me and I’ll forward it to the ladies organizing it!
